Up with the latest words and phrases? Don’t make the “authentic” faux pas!

On The Creative Leadership Forum blog there is a ‘powerful’ post by Jason Cohen titled “Authentic” is dead. Jason suggests that there are many words and phrases we should be abolishing from our business conversations; in our marketing, selling, advertising etc. Why? Because unless we can back them up, they are somewhat meaningless. Especially when everyone seems to be saying the same things, yet only some have the facts and stats to back up such big words and phrases.

The same can be said for writing your resume and marketing yourself. You need to back up the statements you make, as outlined in the article ‘Words to sell your skills, engage the reader & land the interview’.

I was skeptical at first however as I read through Jason’s post I did tend to agree with him. During the job search you certainly encounter a lot of advertisers using grand statements, with employers professing to be this, that and the other such as being “leaders in their field” to being innovative, people focused and so on; yet too many fail to deliver. Hence the post questions the continuing use of these words by “phonies” and the fact that they just undermine those who have earned the right to legitimately use them. Food for thought!
