Equal Pay Day was marked in Australia on Tuesday 1 September. That day represented the extra time that Australian women
had to work beyond the end of the Financial Year to earn the same amount as their male counterparts had on 31 June. Events took place around the country to raise awareness of the gender pay gap and to collect signatures for a petition going to Federal Parliament to close the gap.
In Melbourne, members of BPW Australia (part of an international federation of business and professional women) gathered in the Bourke Street mall. There, they distributed information in red Equal Pay Day bags and engaged with Melbourne’s business community. Support from women and men alike was strong and hundreds of signatures were collected on the petition to take to Canberra.
