Interviews – for most of us these are one of the most dreaded and traumatic parts of the job search process. Most of us struggle to relax and shine in the unnatural forum of the interview. No matter how brilliant we are at our work, the interview will make or break us.
Kevin Wheeler suggests for those who struggle in interviews to consider taking some acting lessons – yes, you read correctly, enroll in some acting classes if your ability to woo the interviewer is not working. Ultimately, as Six Figures discussed with Kevin, whether or not you land the job at the interview stage comes down to if they like you and you’re a good culture fit. That’s pretty much it. Once you have reached interview stage they know you have the skills for the job, they really just want to see if they like you and can work with you.
In the event you are not up for acting lessons or trying your hand at amateur theatre, perhaps consider role playing interview scenarios with someone you trust and then videoing the role play. You will learn a lot about your interview style and body language through watching yourself even in this ‘mock’ interview scenario. You could also engage a career coach who specializes in interview coaching. However, one of the best ways to improve both your interviewing technique and your public speaking abilities are to learn to act.
